Welcome to 2025!

 January 2025

Wow it has been a second since I have done one of these! The holiday season was a lot busier than I was expecting and unfortunately doing these blogs was one of the things that went to the back burner so I would have the time to sneak in some art. A lot has happened so lets get in to it.

Thank you for the support in 2024

This year has been my best year as an artist. Not only did I do a bunch of art, but I had the opportunity to do a lot more shows too. 14 of them, with 3 of them being out of state! It was such a relief to see the out of state shows do so well, i always worry because it costs a lot coming down from Alaska. I was able to be a guest artist for the first time at Twin Cities Con, which is something I wasn't expecting but welcome to see (I was expecting a normal artist alley table). I also started the monthly sticker club in August and that has been going really well. Ive always wanted to do one of these since I am signed up for a few, and it's cool to see that finally in action. As we approach the 10 year mark of doing this professionally, I am happy to announce that I will be focusing on my art full time in 2025. I quit my day job and I'm going to follow my dream of being a full time artist. This is a new chapter in my art journey and I'm excited to share it with you. This wouldn't be possible without you. Whether you came to my table and bought some art, liked a post, or watched one of my videos... Thank you. This allows me to keep doing what I'm doing and I appreciate that so much 💕

It's the new year, I need to do inventory

Shop is closed for the month of January! This will let me stock up local businesses and get my inventory updated in time for Alaska Comic Con. Unfortunately with how the economy is right now, I will also have to increase my prices just slightly. It won't be a big increase, but it is hard to make ends meet at the current prices. The shop will open up on February 1st! There will be new prints in this shop update, as well as a few new stickers as well. Stay tuned! I will reveal them on social media as the time draws closer.

Sticker club news!

For the month of January you can get this white raven holographic sticker! This exclusive sticker comes with a random sticker from my inventory as well as a small print, and is mailed right to your door. If you like getting art in the mail or if you are a bird lover then I highly recommend signing up for the sticker club this month! Envelopes go out on the 24th of January so sign up quick.

Behind the scenes

If you didn't know, I stream weekly on twitch as well as post time lapse videos of my art on YouTube! It would mean a lot if you went over there and dropped a like and a follow 🙂

What's in the works?

Right now I'm working on a lot of commission work. I got a few of them lined up and I'm eager to get them done and off my plate so I can work on my own stuff. Top priority right now is the fantasy bird guide Volume 2. I need to have 20 bird illustrations done before March, which is a lot to do! I am also continuing the Star wars and state bird series, more on that soon. Remember that red dragon with his flock of chickens? I'm also working on a comic for that and hope to release it sometime this year. I'm also going to continue the double raptor portrait series as well... We're going to make a card deck out of that one. Those are the big projects and of course I'll still be doing random bird and landscape illustrations as well. You know the usual. If you want to keep up to date with what I'm up to and what art I'm creating, be sure to follow me on social media!

Fall is here and its time for a Newsletter

Fall is Here

Where did summer go? Everything is yellow, its rainy and grey outside.... ugh I am not ready for winter. There is so much yard work I need to get done before the snow covers and hides everything. But enough of that! I have a sale going on in my online store, use code VESPER for 10% off to celebrate the release of a kick ass dungeon. The sale lasts from October 15 to October 22.

GCX and the Future of Destiny

GCX was a huge success! Out of state conventions are harder for me to pull off since I have to travel so far, but I can safely say after 3 years of doing this one that I am finally figuring out how to do these without taking a loss. Thank you to everyone who came by and bought some art. It's crazy to think that my art is in so many places around the world now. This has been my best convention to date and we are going to keep the momentum going. While Destiny is not in the greatest of places right now, I still am planning on making a few new pieces for gcx. By next GCX I will have another set of 8 raid bosses and also 8 dungeon bosses too. Outside of that, I probably won't be drawing much for Destiny. This franchise will still be one of my biggest inspirations, I am just going to apply it to my own creations. Destiny ended for me when Salvation's Edge released, and while I will still keep up to date with it I probably won't play much outside of new raids. It's been fun, but it's time for me to move on. If you want to read more about GCX 2024 be sure to check out my GCX recap post!

Monthly Sticker Club Design and Kofi Perks

September's envelopes are out the door and now it is time to prep for October. The next monthly sticker is going to be a big Magpie! You will only be able to get it through the monthly sticker club so hurry and sign up now. Along with the sticker club, I also offer digital phone wallpapers each month exclusive to members of any tier. Lastly, Kofi is going to be the platform where I put all of my original paintings for sale. Usually I only have them available for purchase at live events, but I want my whole community to be able to have a chance to pick one up at any time. I only have a few up at the moment since making listings is very tedious, but I will try to have all 70 of them up within the month of October.
October's Sticker

Shop Update November 3rd

I am updating my online store on November 3rd with new prints and stickers! I have prints of a Raven, Magpie, Gray Jay, and Stellar's Jay as well as a few new print packs as well. The Corvids will be available as both singles and in a pack, the landscapes will only be available in packs. Packs include Winter, Birch, DND, and Corvids. I will also finally put my wooden pins online, this includes all of the DND birds, a chicken, and a Raven. Stickers will include all of the birds I did for the raven show.

A Busy Holiday Season

I am doing a lot of holiday events this season! All of them are in Fairbanks except for one. For my last convention of the year I am heading down to Minneapolis for Twin Cities Comic Con, something I am VERY excited for. Be sure to look at the list and see if you can go to a few.

What I'm Working On

Well lets start with the usual, I am still working on landscapes every week and I am always drawing random birds. Volume 2 of the fantasy bird guide is starting to happen, I will have these 20 new birds done and formatted by Alaska Comic Con next year. For the Raven show I will have a lot of new bird-related prints and stickers to reveal. By Twin Cities comic con I will have a couple new fan art pieces, probably Elden Ring or Pokemon themed. In between prepping for those events, I am slowly working on a hoodie design that I want to do. Idk on a timeframe but I eventually want to sell clothing of some sort. The same goes for a desk mat, I really, really want to do one.

GCX 2024 Recap

Ok it has been a week and a bit since I have returned for gcx, I would have wrote this sooner but I haven't been feeling well. It seems out of all the events I do each year, the events in Florida always make me sick afterwards. But anyways! Lets get into it!

Firstly, the prep leading up to this event was much more than previous years. Having merchandise made out of paper gets heavy fast, and so I had to ship a few things ahead of time. Big thanks to Big Ant for holding my boxes before the event! I also had to figure out how the heck I was going to get my giant original down to Florida. Its like 20x30 inches? Way too big for a suite case. I ended up going to Lowe's and bought a big piece of r-tech foam board, the kind we use to insulate our houses. I cut it into 4 pieces and used 3 of them. I made a hole in the middle piece that is exactly the size of the art and then duct taped it all together. Then I stuck it in a big media box from FedEx and sent it down ahead of me. Holy heck it costs a lot to FedEx big art from Alaska to Florida! But it was for charity so all's good.

Miraculously I was able to fit everything between 3 suite cases and keep it under 50lbs per bag. No heavy bags this time! At Arctic Comic con the guy across from me had this really cool roller bag as his carry-on that he used for 11x17 prints and I have bought one since then. This thing is perfect for transporting original paintings! It is a little wide and I definitely clipped some people who walked too close to me in the airport.

Now lets get in to what kind of merchandise I brought to GCX. Going outside of Alaska means I can't bring everything, its just too heavy and not possible. Fortunately this is a gaming convention and that made my decision making real easy, I just brought all of my Destiny fan art. Everything I brought consisted of prints, stickers and original paintings. This year I made sure all of my original paintings were matted and presentable instead of in a portfolio binder like last time. I want people to be able to envision this on their wall, and its easier if the painting is already in a matte. I brought all of my Destiny related paintings, but I also snuck in some Alaskan scenery too! Thank you to everyone who picked up an original. It means the world to me!

Last GCX I had only started the raid boss and landscape series, I only had a couple of them and they were a big hit. I kept getting asked to do certain raid bosses and sceneries and I knew I just had to do more. So for this event I did 3 more raid landscapes, 5 more color raid bosses, and then I experimented a little and did 8 black and white raid bosses as well. I like listening to metal and I love the art style on a lot of those album covers, and surprisingly enough that style was a big hit at GCX, especially Riven and the Witness! It was really cool seeing the content creators stop by my booth and pick up a raid print that depicts one of their achievements or fond memories from the game. Raiding in Destiny holds a special place in my heart, and I'm glad I am able to share that with the community.  Along with the prints, I also brought a good collection of stickers. A lot of them were just sticker versions of the prints I brought, but I also brought a lot of the pokemon and dnd birds too. They did surprisingly well!

Here is Alaska I have 6 foot tall grid panels I can hang my art on and everything looks more presentable. Unfortunately they are a little too big and heavy to bring with me to Florida so I had to get creative with my set up. I used my square grid panels to build a wall and left a window to pass things through, but that by itself was super wobbly. I could literally see it fall on the first day if someone bumped it, but luckily I brought my backdrop. Instead of hanging prints behind me on my backdrop, I used it as a brace instead. I rested the top bar along the top of the wall and zip tied it down. That made it so much better! All in all I am pretty happy with how my setup turned out for GCX 2024, I just wish the rack for my original art was a little thinner so that it would fit in my suitcase (it now lives with my friend in Florida).

This year was the first year for the charity auction! I contributed 3 pieces to it, including the big piece I did for Elysium. It didn't feel right trying to sell it since it depicted their characters, I didn't want it to seem like "hey I drew your characters and now you can buy it", ya know? So using it to raise money for charity was the perfect solution! Through the entirety of GCX we raised $777 for charity, all funds going to St. Jude's. If you picked up one of those charity pieces I would love to see where they ended up!

Seeing everyone again and meeting new people is always my favorite part of GCX. Over the course of 3 years going to these events I can now call fellow content creators friends and that is just so surreal. Being picked out of a crowd because of the destiny art I draw is still not a thing I'm used to, I am always surprised every time. I also got quite a lot of signatures in my sketchbook this year too! As usual I pick up quite the haul from the artists this year. One stick out from this year is the Divinity prop I picked up. I saw it and knew I just HAD to pick it up. And not only that but I got to nerf Saltagreppo with it too. Getting it home wasn't that fun, but it is here in one piece and I plan on making a really cool display for it in the future. With the state of Destiny 2 I was worried about vibes and excitement for GCX 2025, I wasn't sure if I was going to make the trip down next year. But my worries were put to rest, it seems like no matter what happens with Destiny people will still use GCX as an excuse to come out and see everyone. So yeah, see you guys in 2025!

Bird Ninja July Newsletter

 July 2024

It has been a productive summer! Lots of art produced, lots of thoughts had, lets get into it.

Shop Update

I just updated my shop with everything I am bringing to GCX! If you can't make the show then this is your chance to get these prints and stickers before the show. I will keep the shop open while I am in Florida for GCX, here are the dates I will be dropping off orders at the post office. Monday the 12th is the last day I will be dropping orders before gcx, the next time I will be dropping off orders will be the 22nd. If you happen upon this newsletter, you're in luck! Use code: NEWSLETTER for 25% off. I appreciate you guys.

Monthly Sticker Club

I am starting a monthly art subscription where I send you art every month! This small, stamped envelope will cost contain an exclusive 3x3  sticker, a random sticker from my shop, and a small print that you can't find in my shop. There is no set theme, however art will stay within bird, landscape, or fantasy themes. If you like the idea of opening up an art surprise every month, then please go visit my ko-fi and pick a tier that best suites you. For the month of August the sticker will be of my house chicken, Puff.

GCX and the Charity Auction

As you know, I have been preparing for GCX all summer and I can finally say that I am ready with 2 weeks to spare. I will have 24 different 8x10 print designs and 20 different stickers at this show. I will also be bringing a TON of original art with me as well, both fan art and landscape paintings. One thing I am happy to announce is I will be taking part in the charity auction this year. I have 3 pieces that are nicely matted and ready to frame, and they will be auctioned off to raise funds for St. Jude's Children Hospital. When the time comes, please bid on these pieces and help us raise money for an amazing cause.

What I'm working on

Avian August is finally upon us! I will be posting daily birds over on my social medias for the month of August. Now that I am done prepping for GCX, I can set my sights on new projects. I have a few commission pieces to get through, but then I want to work on some paintings relating to Elden Ring, the scenery in that game is so beautiful. Of course I will continue doing watercolors of Alaskan scenery, and from that make a wider selection of landscape print packs. I can also focus more on volume 2 of my bird guide as well! I have had the birds planned since March, and now I have the time to finally focus on them. In the background I have been slowly building the world where my comic takes place. 6 years later I am finally getting somewhere! More on that later.

It has been a productive summer and it is coming to an end way too quickly. I am not ready for the cold Alaskan nights quite yet. I hope you all have had a wonderful summer and I will check back in with you guys in September.

Resources for Watercolor Wednesday

Hi all! As some of you may know, I have been teaching watercolor workshops at the University of Alaska Fairbanks for the last 8 months. They are free workshops with materials provided thanks to the MILL Makerspace, and are open to the UAF community. If you have attended one of them and want to pursue watercolor further, then this is the post for you! I am going to list everything from recommended materials to resources around Alaska. Lets get into it.

Watercolor Wednesday General Info

Watercolor Wednesday happens twice a month up at the UAF Center for Teaching and Learning MILL Makerspace. It is a 2 hour long session open to UAF staff and students and has materials provided for up to 10 people. It is encouraged to bring your own supplies just in case it is a full house. Don't be discouraged if you are not an artist, you can still create an amazing painting! Currently all summer sessions are full, but I will be announcing the Fall semester dates and registration links soon.

Beginning Watercolor Supply List

I am going to link an Amazon list so that all of the materials are in one place. I will also include a list below:

Paper: Arches Cold Press Paper

This is rather expensive, but I think this is the one thing to stay consistent on from class. Water and pigment move, blend, and affect the paper a certain way, and if you use a different brand it will be a way different experience. Best to use Arches.

Coroplast backer board: This is just yard sign material, easy to get. You want to size it to a little bigger than your normal paper size

Binder Clips: 1 inch width. You use these to clamp your paper to the board while it dries. This will keep it from curling

Spray bottle: To pre-wet your paints

Paper towels: This is your "eraser" in watercolor.

Brushes: any brand works, just make sure you have these sizes.

Big wide flat brush: for applying water to big sections

2 inch flat brush: good for skies, oceans, big sections of color

Small flat brush: More Detailed work

Big round brush: Good for big sections of color, but can achieve more detail and texture

Small round brush: Better detail

Rigger brush: blades of grass, branches, tiny details

Glass or tile: to mix paint on. Works way better than mixing on plastic.

Sakura Pigma Micron Pens: Sometimes you just need to define something with line

Uniball Signo White Gel Pen: For tiny white highlights

A 5x7 matte board: Sometimes you need to frame your art to see the beauty in it

White Gouache Paint: This helps cover up your mistakes. You can also use it to smooth areas out.

Paints: Any brand of Watercolor works for beginners as long as you have colors that are close to what we use in class. Refer to the master color list below.

Bright pink, Red, Orange, Cool bright yellow, Warm yellow, Sap green, Emerald green, Viridian green, Cerulean or Manganese blue, Cobalt blue, Ultramarine blue, Prussian blue, Midnight blue, Indigo, Purple, Burnt sienna, Dark brown, Black

Watercolor Resources in Fairbanks

You can find all of the materials listed above here in town, though they are a little more expensive. Michael's and Joanns are the first places you should check, but you can also check Fred Meyer, Walmart, and the UAF bookstore as well. If you make your way down to Anchorage then be sure to check out Blaine's Art Supply! They are the best art store in Alaska and I always make sure to stock up twice a year.

Fairbanks has a thriving art community, especially in watercolor! We have an active watercolor society in town that has monthly meetings, impromptu paint outs, and they keep you in the loop with what art shows are happening around town. Be sure to visit their website and become a member! It is only $20 a year and that will give you access to their newsletter.

We also have the Fairbanks Arts Association who promotes art and artists in the Interior of Alaska. They have a newsletter that keeps you updated on what art is happening in Fairbanks.

Fairbanks has many First Friday shows! On the first Friday of every month, local businesses will invite local artists to present their work for the month. If you want to learn more about upcoming shows I recommend scrolling through the Facebook event pages and typing in "First Friday"

Bird Ninja June Newsletter

June 2024

Wow June flew by fast. It was a month full of super nice summer weather, playing The Final Shape, and lots of painting. I have lots to share so lets get into it.

Hanabi Con

Like I mentioned last time, I decided to go down to Palmer for Hanabi Con on Memorial Day Weekend. Unfortunately the turnout wasn't quite there for the event and it was quite slow... I ended up leaving after day 2. It was good when there was people, there just wasn't people most of the time. It's unfortunate but thats ok because I had another reason to go to Palmer: the scenery. I took so many photos on my trip that I will have no shortage of things to paint in the future. Here are a few of my favorites.

I'm a Bungie Creator

So this was a nice surprise in my inbox this month, I am officially a part of the Bungie Creator program! It is so nice to finally be recognized by Bungie for my activity in the Destiny community... gosh I cannot stop drawing things from that game. This month was also the release of the final expansion of the light and darkness saga, something that has lasted 10 years. To say it hit me in the feels is an understatement, I was crying by the end of it. My life was so different when I picked up this game in 2014 (in high school still), and it has helped me make friends and shape who I am today. They wrapped it up so perfectly and I am excited to see what they do in the future. Per Audacia Ad Astra, Guardians.

Fairbanks Festivals

I did two festivals this month, the Pagan Festival and the Design Arts Walk. These events are on the list of events I do every year and this year was no different, its always a good time seeing friends and sharing my art with the community. I participated in the Quick Art event again to raise funds for Friends of Creamer's Field. The auction is over already, but this is the piece I ended up doing. Tree swallows hold a special place in my heart, and they are also the reason why I call myself the Bird Ninja.

Still Teaching

I am still teaching my small Watercolor Wednesday workshops through UAF and I am really enjoying teaching people how to use watercolor. There are a few students who have attended a few of them and it is so amazing to see how much they have improved over the course of the summer. Here are a few photos of what we've been able to do during the sessions. The sessions remaining are currently full, but I will have more information about fall semester workshops posted to the UAF CTL website soon.

What I'm working on

Doing the last of the preparations for GCX. I have only 3 raid landscapes to go! Then its just ordering and packaging things at this point. A few pieces have gone to the frame shop as well, I am prettying up my original paintings for gcx. I am also thinking about putting together a Destiny mega pack for people who want to collect everything I have done over the years. Next is the landscapes. I need to make a few more landscape pack varieties. The next ones will be oceans, bridges, rivers, birch, and cabins. Maybe do another version of mountains and aurora too. I will have updates on that soon. The next 20 birds for volume 2 of the bird guide will be happening after gcx. Lastly, I found a destiny sketchbook that I bought from the bungie store back in 2015. There are 192 pages and I plan on filling them all with guardians around the community. Here are the first two pages below.

Things are finally starting to slow down a bit travel-wise and I can actually sit down and do some watercolors. I've also been able to play games more too... I have fallen back into the Destiny trap. Bungie keeps releasing stuff, how can I not play it? Anyways lets get into it.

Arctic Comic Con

Thank you to everyone who came out to Arctic Comic con. This was the best year yet and they have really expanded on how they can use that space. I feel like there was a lot more to do there this time. It was really good to see everyone again and meet new people. If you have reached out after Arctic comic con, I promise I will be getting back to you shortly! I have already reserved my table for next year, this time next to all my friends. Hopefully I'll see you there! In the meantime I will be creating more art.

Hanabi Con

While I was in Anchorage, I found out about a new anime convention that is happening on Memorial Day weekend. This is its first year , so I really don't know what to expect, but I decided to say "screw it" and get a table. This event has the potential to be a good one! My only concern is it's in Palmer... but Memorial Day weekend could bring in people? We will see. So if you have nothing to do on April 25, 26, and 27 then maybe make your way out to the Alaska State Fairgrounds for Hanabi con!

Digital Wallpapers

I have been slowly taking my art and turning it into digital wallpapers. Right now I have done some Destiny ones, mainly because they were super easy to format, but I will soon have birds and landscapes up as well. Hoping to release more sometime this summer. You can find them here.

What I'm working on

I have finished a series of bosses for GCX! Most of my prep for gcx is done, I am finishing up a giant piece for Clan Elysium at the moment. I got the background in, just need to get the guardians in... I cannot wait to show you it when I am done. Then comes a few landscapes depicting a few raids, that series will be done for gcx too. Add a sticker or two, yea I'm going to have a bunch of new stuff by the time August rolls around. I'm also painting landscapes every week. As soon as I got the gcx stuff taken care of I am going to be painting lots of landscapes for a travel guide I have planned. I'll have more on that soon. So yea... Destiny and landscapes, that is what my art has been for the last 2 months, and what it will be throughout the summer (and maybe a bird or two).
